“A scheme that is far more generous, by the way, than anything provided in France, Germany or Ireland.”

Boris Johnson, House of Commons

2 September 2020

Facts

Boris Johnson told the House of Commons on 2nd September 2020: “We are not only continuing with the furlough scheme until the end of this month, as the right hon. Gentleman knows - a scheme that is far more generous, by the way, than anything provided in France, Germany or Ireland.”

An analysis by Channel 4 FactCheck concluded that it is actually impossible to say which country has the most generous furlough scheme, due to the complex nature of what they all provide. It’s not clear what evidence Boris Johnson is relying on to back up his claim that Britain’s system is more generous.

FactCheck asked Johnson to provide evidence for his statement but received no response.

Verdict

This dubious claim that the British furlough scheme was “far more generous” than France, Germany or Ireland remains unsubstantiated and seems unlikely.
