Any involvement of police officers will be “solely about police officer recruitment”

Prime Minister’s team, visit to West Yorkshire Police

4 September 2019

Claim

With rows of police recruits as a backdrop, Boris Johnson gave a speech about his earlier announcement of 20,000 new police officers but in it he also talked at length about Brexit.

Facts

West Yorkshire Police Chief Constable John Robins said in a statement the next day: “It was the understanding of West Yorkshire Police that any involvement of our officers was solely about police officer recruitment. We had no prior knowledge that the speech would be broadened to other issues until it was delivered.” Robins added that he was “disappointed.”

Verdict

Downing Street organisers misled West Yorkshire Police when they said that the prime minister was only going to speak about the police.
