Chances of a no-deal Brexit are “a million-to-one against”

Boris Johnson, leadership hustings in London

25 June 2019

Claim

Boris Johnson told the hustings: “I don’t think that is where we are going to end up — I think it is a million-to-one against — but it is vital that we prepare.”

Facts

Channel 4’s political editor Gary Gibbon reported on 3 September that Boris Johnson had been telling Tory MPs he believed the chances of striking a deal were “50/50.” This presumably meant that the chances of no deal were 50/50, not a million-to-one against.

Verdict

On the one hand Boris told Tory MPs there was a 50% chance of a no deal Brexit. On the other hand he told Tory activists that it's "a million to one against.
