“factcheckUK”

Conservative Party press office, Twitter account

19 November 2019

Claim

During the ITV leadership debate, the official Conservative press office Twitter account changed its name to “factcheckUK.” Under its new title, it stated claims made by Johnson were true and claims made by Corbyn were false.

Facts

On BBC Newsnight, Conservative Party Chairman James Cleverly denied misleading the public, saying the nature of the account was “clear.”

However, Twitter said that the Conservative Party had attempted to “mislead people by editing verified profile information.”

The independent fact-checking organisation Full Fact agreed: “It is inappropriate and misleading for the Conservative press office to rename their Twitter account ‘factcheckUK’ during this debate.”

Verdict

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party was deliberately deceiving voters by presenting party propaganda as independently verified facts. This forms part of a pattern of deliberate deception of voters by the Conservative Party, which previously shared a heavily edited video on Twitter deceitfully portraying Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer lost for words in response to a question on Labour’s Brexit policy.
