“Freeports are one of the many advantages that all the nations of the United Kingdom can enjoy as a result of our departure from the European Union.”

Michael Gove, House of Commons

25 October 2021

Facts

Virginia Crosbie, the Conservative MP for Ynys Môn, asked Michael Gove if “...he is working with the Welsh Government to ensure that there is at least one new freeport in Wales” Gove replied “Freeports are one of the many advantages that all the nations of the United Kingdom can enjoy as a result of our departure from the European Union.”

The EU already allows free ports. It is not true to say you can’t have free ports or tax-free zones if you are a member state of the EU. There are more than 80 such zones across the Union.

Verdict

Michael Gove was misleading the House of Commons. His misleading statement remains on the House of Commons record in contradiction of the Ministerial Code. This same claim has been repeated by many other ministers here, here and here.

We sent this verdict to Michael Gove for comment. No response.
