It's true that we will all pay 1.25p more in the pound for National Insurance. But the Treasury claim that contributions would rise by 1.25% grossly understates the financial pain inflicted on taxpayers. The real percentage rise is just over 10%.
Verdict
The false Treasury claim has at last been corrected and is now accurate. It was however live for a least three months. When we looked on 2nd Feb 2022 the false claim was still on the government website.
This is yet another example of an error made by civil servants which favours the government the of the day. Civil servants have a duty to be politically impartial and scrupulous with the facts. When we approached the Treasury for comment, a spokesperson questioned our credentials as a “bona fide media outlet.”
