“I am proud of the tolerance and respect that we show to people coming to this country from abroad.”

5 January 2017

Facts

Suella Braverman states that “The UK is home to many different cultures and immigrants have made a significant contribution to this country. I am proud of the tolerance and respect that we show to people coming to this country from abroad.” In October 2022, Braverman said that it was her “dream” and an “obsession” to see a front page of the Daily Telegraph describing asylum seekers being sent to Ruanda.

The first attempt to send asylum seekers to Rwanda in June 2022 resulted in asylum seekers being restrained and threatening suicide. The UN Refugee Agency have said that the "arrangement, which amongst other concerns seeks to shift responsibility and lacks necessary safeguards, is incompatible with the letter and spirit of the 1951 Convention" in regards to the rights of refugees.Former Home Secretary Amber Rudd has described that the plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda as "brutal" and "impractical".

Verdict

Suella Braverman cannot be accused of misleading her constituents. There is no reason to doubt her assertion  that she is  “proud of the tolerance and respect that we show to people coming to this country from abroad.” International agencies such as the United Nations, however, regard her policies as intolerant and even barbaric.

We emailed Suella Braverman’s office and the Home Office offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
