“I don’t comment on conversations with the Queen”

Boris Johnson to reporters

18 September 2019

Claim

When asked on a visit to meet military chiefs in Salisbury about David Cameron’s revelation that he had asked the Queen in 2014 to “raise an eyebrow” about the prospect of Scotland voting for independence, Johnson told reporters: “Not only do I not comment on conversations I may have held with Her Majesty, but I don’t comment on conversations she may have held with anybody else.”

Facts

Johnson had reportedly spilled the beans on his first prime ministerial conversation with the Queen. According to EuroNews journalist Vincent McAviney, Johnson was heard claiming that the Queen had told him: “I don’t know why anyone would want the job.” According to McAviney, Johnson’s staff quickly told him “not to repeat those things so loudly.”

Verdict

Johnson’s claim that he doesn’t comment on conversations with the Queen should be assessed in light of the report by EuroNews journalist McAviney.
