“I know what it's like flipping burgers at 16, on minimum wage, and then watching my pay slip away to taxes.”

Kemi Badenoch, Conservative Leadership Candidate, ITV leadership debate

17 July 2022

Facts

Kemi Badenoch was born in 1980. There was no minimum wage until after the 1998 National Minimum Wage Act. In 1999 the first rate was set at £3.60 an hour, but this was for adults aged over 22.

There had been Wages Councils which regulate pay in select industries but these were abolished in 1993, after which only the Agricultural Wages Board and Scottish and Northern Irish equivalents existed.

Verdict

There was no minimum wage when Kemi Badenoch was 16, so she could not have been earning a minimum wage.

We emailed Kemi Badenoch’s office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
