“I really thought that we had moved on from the notion that wives are merely an extension of their husbands. Seems that Labour didn’t get the memo.”

James Cleverly, Twitter

April 6, 2022

Facts

Posting on Twitter, James Cleverly rebuked the Labour party for their criticisms of Rishi Sunak after it was revealed that his wife Akshata Murty is avoiding paying UK tax on her foreign earnings.

Also on Twitter, Mr Cleverly had previously posted a joke at Emily Thornberry’s expense, referring to her as “Lady Nugee”.  This was a reference to her husband, High Court Judge Sir Christopher Nugee.

Verdict

Cleverly’s claim that “we had moved on from the notion that wives are merely an extension of their husbands” did not apply to himself, as his remark about Labour MP Emily Thornberry proves.

We approached James Cleverly's office to give him a chance to comment, but received no response.
