"I think it is very important in politics... to try and keep people’s families out of it.”

Boris Johnson, The Independent

6 April 2022

Facts

Speaking to reporters after the revelation Rishi Sunak’s wife Akshata Murty is avoiding paying UK tax on her foreign earnings, the Prime Minister said: “I think it is very important in politics, if you possibly can, to try and keep people’s families out of it.”

In an encounter with Emily Thornberry in the House of Commons in March 2018, when the Shadow Foreign Secretary asked Mr Johnson a question about the value of the Commonwealth, he responded by calling her “Lady Nugee”. This was a reference to her husband, High Court Judge Sir Christopher Nugee, a comment branded “sexist” and “inappropriate'' by then Speaker John Bercow.

Verdict

Boris Johnson’s claim that it is “important” to keep families out of politics was undermined by his personal comments about Emily Thornberry.

We approached Boris Johnson's office, No10 Press Office and the Cabinet Office to give them a chance to comment, but received no response.
