“I think it’s very very good that we’re not only maintaining the jobs in the NHS but we’re actually moving to have 50,000 more nurses.”

Grant Shapps, BBC Breakfast

Facts

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps told BBC Breakfast that “50,000 more nurses” are being  recruited to the NHS.

“I think it’s very very good that we’re not only maintaining the jobs in the NHS but we’re actually moving to have 50,000 more nurses.”

This refers to a pledge in the last Conservative election manifesto. When Johnson was asked about this on Sophy Ridge in November 2019, he admitted that only 31,000 of those would be new nurses.

Verdict

Grant Shapps’ claim was misleading, and surprisingly took no account of his Prime Minister’s admission that the 50,000 figure was wrong.
