“I’m looking forward to showing solidarity with the Taiwanese people”

Liz Truss, MP & Former Prime Minister, Guardian

9 May 2023

Facts

In May 2023, former Prime Minister Liz Truss visited Taiwan to give a speech about democracy in the face of “increasingly aggressive behaviour and rhetoric from the regime in Beijing”.

The speech was for Prospect Foundation, a Taiwan-based think tank.

Ahead of the meeting she said: “I’m looking forward to showing solidarity with the Taiwanese people in person in the face of increasingly aggressive behaviour and rhetoric from the regime in Beijing”

The Register of Members’ Financial Interests shows that Ms Truss was paid £80,000 by Prospect Foundation for the speech.

Verdict

Liz Truss said she wanted to “show solidarity in person with the Taiwanese people”. She failed to add that she was being paid £80,000 by a think tank to go there.

We emailed Liz Truss’ parliamentary office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
