Human Rights Watch found it is commonplace in Rwanda for “Arbitrary detention, ill-treatment, and torture in official and unofficial detention facilities,” as well as “fair trial standards” to be “routinely flouted.”

The US Government's 2021 assessment of Rwanda found “Significant human rights issues,” including “unlawful or arbitrary killings by the government; forced disappearance by the government; torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the government; harsh and life-threatening prison conditions; arbitrary detention.”

Verdict

Suella Braverman was misleading MPs when she told the Home Affairs Committee that Rwanda was “fundamentally a safe and secure country.” She has not corrected her false statement, meaning that she is in breach of the Ministerial Code.

We emailed Suella Braverman’s office and the Home Office offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
