“Jeremy Corbyn’s Brexit minister can’t or won’t answer a simple question about Labour’s position on Brexit”

Claim

The Conservative Party shared a video on Twitter which deceitfully portrayed Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer lost for words in response to a question by presenter Piers Morgan on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. The video’s caption said: “Jeremy Corbyn’s Brexit Minister can’t or won’t answer a simple question about Labour’s position on Brexit.”

Facts

The full video of the interview showed that Starmer answered the question immediately. The fact-checking website Full Fact said the Conservative Party appeared to have edited the footage by taking a segment in which Starmer was listening to a question and inserting it after Morgan’s question.

Verdict

Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party was lying and distorting the truth when it used a Twitter video to claim that Starmer had no answer to Morgan’s question.

In an interview the following day, Morgan put it to Tory Chairman James Cleverly that the video was “fake news.” Morgan said: “Why should we believe any video or anything that you guys put out? If you’re prepared to be that shameless and that cynical and that misleading, why should we believe anything?” Cleverly did not answer the question and refused to apologise for video.
