"Let us start with a difficult message for the party opposite: you cannot borrow your way to growth"

Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor of the Exchequer, House of Commons

17 November 2022

Facts

In the Commons, Jeremy Hunt claimed the high ground over Labour MPs mocking him for claiming his economic plan would boost the UK's economy. He responded, with a "tough" lesson in economics: "You cannot borrow your way to growth."

But only a few weeks earlier, Jeremy Hunt's own party did just that, with Hunt's predecessor, Kwasi Kwarteng building a fiscal package centred around borrowing.

Verdict

Shoddy and dishonest from the Chancellor. Given the scale of the Tory economic debacle, Jeremy Hunt is not entitled to lecture Labour about fiscal strategy. All the more so since national debt has more than doubled since the Tories took office in 2010.

We emailed Jeremy Hunt’s office and HM Treasury offering them the chance to respond. The email was received by both, but no response.
