"Mr Speaker, it's the same old Labour ideas. More debt. More inflation. More strikes. More migration"

PM Rishi Sunak, Twitter

30 November 2022

Facts

The Conservatives have been in power for the past 12 years, and during this period the UK has experienced record debt, inflation, strike activity and migration.

"More debt"

  • When the Conservatives came into power in 2010, they inherited Britain’s national debt of around £1 Trn (around 69% of GDP) - The National debt is currently between £2.4-£2.5Trn (around 102% of GDP)

  • The Conservatives have increased the national debt more than every Labour Government combined

  • What is often conveniently forgotten is that the Labour Government ran a surplus between 1998-2002 – an achievement almost unparalleled in modern history in the UK

"More inflation"

  • U.K. consumer price inflation rose by 11.1 percent in the 12 months to October, reaching its highest point in 40 years, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

"More strikes":

  • Between the time of Sunak's statement and Christmas, strikes will take place in the following industries: Rail, Eurostar, Bus, National Highways, Baggage Handlers, Royal Mail, Nurses, Driving examiners, Civil servants, Border force, ambulance and teachers

"More migration":

  • Over the past year, according to data released last week, net migration into Britain has soared to 504,000, the highest on record. This means half a million more people are coming into Britain than are leaving

  • The Office for Budget Responsibility made clear in its economic forecasts two weeks ago, Britain will now continue to have net migration of at least 200,000 every year until the end of the 2020s, if not for much longer.

Verdict
