“My father was a refugee, I’m the daughter of a refugee”

Suella Braverman, Attorney General, Question Time

17 March 2022

Facts

Braverman claimed her father was a refugee and described herself as the daughter of a refugee. This is disputed.

The only evidence to support Braverman’s claim is her statement on Question Time. Other statements made by her do not reflect this assertion. Her website states that her parents ‘came to this country with very little’.

They arrived in the UK in the 1960s, but Braverman’s statement characterised her parents more as economic migrants than refugees.

Both the Independent and ITV describe her parents as migrants, not refugees.

Verdict

The only evidence for Braverman’s claim is her own statement.

We emailed Suella Braverman’s office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
