Number of rough sleepers "lower than at any time in the last eight years"

Boris Johnson, People’s PMQs

30 January 2020

Facts

Speaking on a Facebook live video for one of Johnson’s so-called “People’s PMQs”, the Prime Minister claimed the number of rough sleepers was “lower than at any time in the last eight years”.

However, the latest figures available at the time, taken from the government’s own data showed that rough sleeping in England more than doubled after the Tories came to power in 2010, from 1,768 in 2010 to 4,266 in 2019.

We cannot find any evidence to support Johnson’s claim.

Verdict

Boris Johnson’s statement was false.
