“People said it wasn’t £350m per week - this was the great thing that I had made up. “

Boris Johnson, Mumsnet Q and A

30 May 2022

Facts

Speaking during a Q and A for Mumsnet, Boris Johnson implied that the Leave campaign’s  widely debunked. “£350m per week for the NHS” claim was not a lie. ,

He said: “People are throwing all sorts of stuff at me and trying to undermine what I’m trying to do. I think when you actually look at the detail of their accusations, they tend to dissolve. People said it wasn’t £350m per week - this was the great thing that I had made up. Actually, this year, it would have been considerably more than £350m per week. The statistic was wrong, but it turned out that it was an underestimate.”

This claim was made repeatedly by the Leave campaign, including Boris Johnson. As established by Channel4 FactCheck, the £350m figure is misleading, as it does not account for the money that flows into the UK from the EU, such as in the EU rebate which reduces our contributions to the bloc.  The Institute for Fiscal Studies concluded that the £350m was “not sensible”. The UK Statistics Authority criticised Boris Johnson for “a clear misuse of official statistics”.
