“I think that it would be a mistake to keep the UK bound in beyond the time that the people want to come out… at a cost of £1 billion a month”

Boris Johnson, Today programme

30 September 2019

Claim

Johnson repeated the figure in his conference speech on 2 October and in the House of Commons on 28 October.

Facts

This was not true, as the fact-checking website Full Fact pointed out. An extension of a few months would cost nothing more than leaving with a deal on 31 October. The only way to get to the figure would be to compare it to leaving with no deal and not paying the divorce bill. But Boris Johnson’s government has given no indication it wants to renegotiate the divorce bill.

Verdict

Johnson’s often repeated statement that the cost of the UK remaining in the EU is £1 billion a month is a lie. It was exposed by Full Fact on 1 October and Johnson has repeated it since. Nick Robinson’s failure to challenge Johnson’s deceitful claim on the Today show is yet another example of the British media's easy tolerance with his falsehood and lies.
