Sue Gray "didn't pull her punches" in her initial Partygate report.

Nadhim Zahawi, Sophy Ridge on Sunday

21 May 2022

Facts

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi was defending the Prime Minister on Sunday Morning TV. His claim that Sue Gray “didn’t pull her punches” was untrue. Crucially she did not comment on whether individual events were in line with Covid rules, stating that this would be "inappropriate" while the police investigated.

Verdict

Nadhim Zahawi was misleading TV viewers. Sue Gray did “pull her punches.”  She was obliged to do so in the initial report because the parallel police investigation meant that she was severely restricted in what she was allowed to report.

We approached Nadhim Zahawi’s office (and the Treasury press office once Zahawi had been appointed Chancellor) to give him a chance to comment, but received no response.
