“That is something people can make their own decisions about”

Liz Truss, BBC One’s Sunday Morning Programme

26 February 2022

Facts

When asked whether or not she would back anyone wanting to volunteer to help Ukrainians fighting for their freedom, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said: “absolutely”.

She added: “That is something people can make their own decisions about. The people of Ukraine are fighting for freedom and democracy, not just for Ukraine, but for the whole of Europe. Absolutely, if people want to support that struggle, I would support them in doing that.”

But the government’s own guidance - issued by the FCDO which Liz Truss heads- says: “If you travel to Ukraine to fight, or to assist others engaged in the conflict, your activities may amount to offences against UK legislation and you could be prosecuted on your return to the UK.”

Verdict

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss’ statement contradicted the guidance issued by her own Foreign Office.

We approached Lizz Truss’ parliamentary office and the FCDO to give her a chance to comment, but received no response.
