“The Home Secretary’s family came over at the time of Idi Amin expelling the Indians from Uganda”

Dominic Raab, Andrew Marr Show

Facts

Dominic Raab told the public on the Andrew Marr Show that Priti Patel’s “family came over at the time of Idi Amin expelling the Indians from Uganda”.

Priti Patel’s parents did come to the UK from Uganda. However, their arrival in the 1960s came before dictator Idi Amin’s mass expulsion of Uganda Asians in 1972, which saw many families forced to flee the country and admitted to the UK as colonial citizens.

Verdict

Dominic Raab’s statement was inaccurate on a matter which was already well-documented and could easily have been checked. He created a more dramatic “back story” for his colleague, Priti Patel.
