“The last thing I would want to do is cause a by-election in my constituency”

Nadine Dorries MP, Talk TV

9 June 2023

Facts

At 10.41am on 9 June 2023, Nadine Dorries said that “the last thing I would want to do is cause a by-election in my constituency”

At 3.50pm, that same day, Nadine Dorries went on twitter to inform the public that she was “standing down as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, with immediate effect.” This should have triggered a by-election.

Verdict

Nadine Dorries changed her mind within hours of announcing “The last thing I would want to do is cause a by-election in my constituency.” Shortly afterwards she changed her mind yet again, and reneged on her promise to stand down with immediate effect as an MP. Like Boris Johnson, any statement made by Nadine Dorries should be regarded as false until convincing independent evidence emerges that it is true.

We sent Nadine Dorries an email to her parliamentary address offering her the chance to reply to the commentary above. We did receive an automatic reply to this email. Since she has ceased to be an MP we no longer feel confident that she will have seen it. So we have also sent an email to her publishers, Harper Collins. Thus far we have received no response.
