“The NHS already had the £350m on the side of the bus. That was delivered by my right honourable friend the member for Maidenhead in 2018, with an extra 34bn uplift to the NHS by 2023.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg, House of Commons

8 December 2021

Facts

This £350m figure has been debunked. As the website Full Fact pointed out: “We have never paid the EU £350 million a week and we have never owed the EU £350 million a week. After we leave the EU, that means we cannot take back control of £350 million a week.”

Verdict

Jacob Rees-Mogg was misleading MPs when he said ‘The NHS already had the £350m on the side of the bus.’  According to the Ministerial Code,  “It is of paramount importance that Ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament, correcting any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity.  Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation to the Prime Minister.” Rees-Mogg has not corrected the Commons record, in defiance of the Ministerial Code.

We approached Jacob Rees-Mogg’s office and the Cabinet Office to give them a chance to comment, but received no response.
