“[There are] 2.2 million people supported with the Warm Homes Discount, Mr Speaker, worth £140 per week.”

Boris Johnson, House of Commons

5 January 2022

Facts

The Warm Home Discount Scheme offers some low-income households a one-off discount on their energy bill between October and March.

Boris Johnson told the House of Commons that the Warm Homes Discount is “worth £140 per week”.

He repeated this claim to Angela Rayner, saying: “[Rayner] obviously wasn't listening to the previous answer, let me remind her, the Warm Homes Discount, [there are] already 2.2 million people supported to the tune of £140 a week.”

This is not true. The discount is worth £140 for the entire winter.

Verdict

Johnson’s claim, which he uttered twice, was one of many misleading statements made by the Prime Minister at PMQ’s on January 5th. It remains on the Hansard record in defiance of the Ministerial Code.

We approached Mr Johnson’s office, the Cabinet Office and the No 10 Press Office to give them a chance to comment, but no reply.
