There are “250” people in hospital with Omicron

Dominic Raab, Sky News

13 December 2021

Facts

Dominic Raab told Kay Burley on Sky News that there were 250 people in hospital with the Omicron variant in December 2021. When asked about the numbers of hospitalisations, he said: “The last I saw was in the low hundreds… I think 250 the last time I looked.”

He later told the BBC that there were just nine people in hospital with the variant. "I know we've had one death," he said. "I think we've got nine people who are in hospital with it."

Officials then clarified that Mr Raab “misspoke” on both occasions by getting his figures wrong, and that at the time there were 10 people in hospital with Omicron.

Verdict

Dominic Raab makes a habit of getting his facts wrong, see here and here. However on this occasion the Justice Minister was swift to rush out a correction, setting a welcome example to others.

We sent this analysis to Dominic Raab’s office to give him an opportunity to respond, but received no acknowledgement or response.
