“There are more people in work than there were before the pandemic began.”

Boris Johnson, Prime Minister’s Questions

23 November 2021

Facts

When this claim was scrutinised by Full Fact the fact checking organisation concluded “There are more payrolled employees, but the total number of people in paid work, including the self-employed, is below the level seen just prior to the pandemic.”

We approached Mr Johnson’s office, the Cabinet Office and the No 10 Press Office to give them a chance to comment, but received no response.

Verdict

According to the Ministerial Code, “It is of paramount importance that Ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament, correcting any inadvertent error at the earliest opportunity.  Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will be expected to offer their resignation to the Prime Minister.”

Boris Johnson was misleading Parliament. He has not corrected his false statement, meaning that he is in breach of the Ministerial Code.
