“There is no threat to the Erasmus scheme, and we will continue to participate in it. UK students will continue to be able to enjoy the benefits of exchanges with our European friends and partners”

Boris Johnson, House of Commons

15 January 2020

Facts

Boris Johnson told the House of Commons in January that there was “no threat to the Erasmus scheme”(strictly speaking, the Erasmus Exchange Programme, established in the late 1980s, allowed EU students to live and study in each others’ countries for limited periods.) However, on 24 December 2020 when the free trade deal between the UK and EU was published, the government announced that the UK would be withdrawing from the Erasmus Scheme.

Verdict

Johnson’s statements that there was “no threat” to Erasmus and that Britain would “continue to participate” both turned out to be wrong.
