There is “nothing” MPs can do to stop a no-deal Brexit on October 31

Dominic Cummings, to The Daily Telegraph

8 August 2019

Claim

The Daily Telegraph reported that Dominic Cummings, senior advisor to the prime minister, had told MPs that there was nothing they could do to stop a no-deal Brexit, even if Boris Johnson lost a confidence vote, because he could set the date for a general election after 31 October. The Telegraph quoted a Downing Street source saying: “We can’t stop them forcing an election but we control the timetable, so we will force the date after Oct 31. If there must be a general election, then it will be days after Oct 31.”

Facts

This was not the case. MPs passed a series of acts and amendments which were successful in preventing Britain leaving the EU on the 31 October.

Verdict

Cummings’ claim that MPs could do nothing to stop no deal was false.
