“This licence fee announcement will be the last. The days of the elderly being threatened with prison sentences and bailiffs knocking on doors, are over.”

Nadine Dorries, Twitter

15 January 2022

Facts

Nadine Dorries tweeted this statement after she announced that the BBC’s licence fee will be frozen.

Just days earlier in the House of Commons, Ms Dorries herself stated:  “The BBC confirmed recently that no enforcement action has been taken against anyone over 75 years of age at this stage.”

We approached Nadine Dorries to give her a chance to comment, but received no response.

Verdict

Anyone reading Dorries’ Tweet would naturally believe that the elderly were being threatened with “prison sentences and bailiffs knocking on doors.” Yet only a few days before she had told Parliament that “no enforcement action” had been taken against anyone over 75 years old. A misleading statement from Nadine Dorries.
