“[Truss and Biden] agreed on the importance of protecting the Good Friday Agreement.”

No 10 Statement on a phone call between PM Liz Truss and US President Biden

6 September 2022

Facts

During the phone call, President Biden in fact warned PM Truss against unilaterally ripping up the Northern Ireland protocol. The White House emphasised in its own statement that the leaders discussed “the importance of reaching a negotiated agreement with the EU on the Northern Ireland protocol”.

Verdict

This Downing Street statement did not fully convey the substance of the Prime Minister’s first call. As the White House statement hinted, President Biden disagreed with Liz Truss about her plans for the Northern Ireland protocol.

We emailed Liz Truss’ office and the No 10 Press Office offering them the chance to respond. The email was received by Liz Truss, but no reply.
