“We are making sure that nobody faces energy bills of a typical, more than a typical £2,500 from this weekend.”

PM Liz Truss, BBC Radio Lancashire

29 September 2022

Facts

Full Fact shows that the figure of £2,500 is based on average energy usage. Some households will pay less and some will pay more.

From Full Fact: ‘In response to Full Fact’s request for comment, Downing Street directed us to Ms Truss’s 8 September speech announcing the policy in Parliament, where she said: “A typical household will pay no more than £2,500 per year for each of the next two years”.’

Verdict

Many ordinary people will have gained the impression from listening to Liz Truss that their bills will be capped at £2,500. That is not the case. Truss has used the slippery term “typical”. Readers can judge for themselves whether she is being dishonest.

We emailed Liz Truss’ office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
