Last year Johnson said regulatory checks and customs controls in the Irish Sea would damage the “fabric of the union”. His deal includes both.

Johnson’s statement was a lie. Even The Times, which endorsed him as the next prime minister, said “it is hard to see this as anything other than a lie.”
