“We remain committed to uncovering the causes of this tragedy, and ensuring it is never repeated.”

Facts

Discussing the Grenfell Tower disaster, Downing Street said on Twitter: “We remain committed to uncovering the causes of this tragedy, and ensuring it is never repeated.”

Four months later, the government voted down implementing recommendations made by the inquiry into the fire. The opposition amendment to that effect was defeated by 188 votes to 318.

Verdict

The government’s rejection of a Labour amendment to the Fire Safety Bill makes the Downing Street claim to be committed to prevent a repetition of Grenfell appear cynical and insincere.
