“We were still only 5 points behind”

Nadine Dorries MP, Conservative Democratic Organisation conference

13 May 2023

Facts

On 13 May 2023, at the Conservative Democratic Organisation conference in Bournemouth, Nadine Dorries stated that the Conservative Party were only “5 points behind” in the polls when Boris Johnson resigned from his role as Prime Minister.

YouGov’s voting intention poll, conducted on 6-7 July (data all conducted before Johnson resigned), showed that Labour was leading by 11 points over the Conservatives at this time. Another poll by YouGov conducted on 13-14 July (after Johnson had resigned) showed the same 11 point Labour lead.

Verdict

Don’t believe anything Dorries says unless it can be independently proven to be true.

We sent Nadine Dorries an email at her parliamentary address offering her the chance to reply to the commentary above. We did receive an automatic reply to this email. Since she has ceased to be an MP we no longer feel confident that she will have seen it. So we have also sent an email to her publishers, Harper Collins. Thus far we have received no response.
