“We've increased school funding by a minimum of £5,150 per pupil.”

Conservative Party, Twitter

7 December 2020

Facts

The Conservative Party claimed on Twitter - in a since deleted tweet from its official account and a video featuring party chair Amanda Milling - that it has increased school funding “by a minimum of £5,150 per pupil”.

This claim was false. School funding had increased by between £150 and £250, not by £5,150 as stated by the Conservative party.

The Conservative party figure was for total school funding per pupil, not the increase

The Conservative Twitter account subsequently deleted the tweet and have since restated the amount pupils will receive in total in a new tweet. This tweet also claims there is a £14 billion funding boost for schools. FullFact have previously disputed this claim too, as it does not account for inflation.

Verdict

This claim was false. This is a rare (and praiseworthy) case where Conservative ministers and spokespeople withdrew and corrected false statements. This commendable practice needs to be followed much more widely.
