“We’ve now seen actually the biggest reduction in tax for about a quarter of a century.”

Brandon Lewis, Sky News

Facts

Secretary of state for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis told Sky News that the UK has seen “the biggest reduction in tax for about a quarter of a century”. This echoes Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s claim during the Spring statement, when he said that his "tax plan delivers the biggest net cut to personal taxes in over a quarter of a century".

The announcements made in Sunak’s spring statement do mean that people will be paying less money in income taxes and National Insurance in 2024-25 than had previously been planned. But as BBC Reality check pointed out, these decreases are smaller than the increases in tax Sunak has announced over the last year. Taking into account all of the changes, people will be paying more taxes by 2024-25.

Verdict

Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis was misleading Sky News viewers about tax cuts.

We approached Brandon Lewis’ parliamentary office and the Northern Ireland Office to give him a chance to comment, but received no response.
