“You can take the lawyer out of Islington but you can’t take Islington out of the lawyer.”

Boris Johnson, meeting with Conservative backbenchers

24 March 2021

Facts

In a meeting with Conservative backbenchers, the Prime Minister reportedly criticised Starmer for living in Islington. He said: “You can take the lawyer out of Islington but you can’t take Islington out of the lawyer.”

Keir Starmer does not live in Islington but in Kentish Town, which is around 2.5 miles from Islington. He represents the London constituency Holborn & St Pancras. Both his home and his constituency are in the London borough of Camden, which is also not Islington. By contrast, Boris Johnson lived in Islington for some years.

Verdict

This was a bizarre insult to Keir Starmer, in which the only alleged fact was false.
