“Absolutely” “I’m not planning public spending reductions”

PM Liz Truss, Prime Minister’s Questions

12 October 2022

Facts

Liz Truss was replying to a question from Sir Keir Starmer whether she would stick to her pledge, made during the Tory leadership election, not to reduce public spending. Truss had previously said: "I’m very clear, I’m not planning public spending reductions". She responded saying she would “Absolutely” stick to her pledge.

Verdict

In her defence, Liz Truss may have genuinely believed what she was saying - and in any event she did not remain in Downing Street long enough to put any plans into effect.

We emailed Liz Truss’ office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
