"Honesty means telling the truth, even when that's not easy"

Rishi Sunak, Conservative Leadership Candidate, Sky News

4 August 2022

Facts

Whilst campaigning to be Tory leader and the British Prime Minister, Sunak was asked, "What does honesty mean to you in politics and leadership?" To which he responded, "Honesty means telling the truth, even when that's not easy."

He re-tweeted the clip from Sky News on his own twitter page.

Sunak focused on the importance of 'honesty' throughout his campaign. In another instance whilst on the campaign trail, he made a pledge to, "put integrity and honesty at the heart of how I run government and how I want to be Prime Minister.”

He then repeated this pledge in his first speech as Prime Minister, promising that, "This government will have integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level."

Verdict

All too true. Sunak is correct that "honesty means telling the truth, even when that's not easy." Sadly for Britain (and for his reputation) Mr Sunak repeatedly found it much too difficult to tell the truth once he became Prime Minister. This website contains numerous examples of Sunak’s falsehoods and misrepresentations.

We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
