On October 24 2022, Rees-Mogg declared after Rishi Sunak’s election as Tory leader and Prime Minister: “Now is the time for party unity and I congratulate @RishiSunak on his victory and will support his leadership.”

Verdict

Rees-Mogg’s statement in July that he “could not possibly support” Sunak turned out to be false.

We emailed Mr Rees-Mogg’s office offering him the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
