“I happened to vote for Brexit”

Grant Shapps, Energy Secretary, Sky News

11 June 2023

Facts

Speaking on Sky News’s Sophie Ridge on Sunday programme, Energy Secretary Grant Shapps told Ridge that he voted for Brexit.

In 2016 before the country voted, Shapps told Sky News: “In the end I have come to the conclusion that because of concerns about the uncertainty of leaving, what it would mean for business, I will vote for Remain.”

Writing for the Brexit Central website six months after the referendum, Shapps confirmed that he had voted Remain: “At the back of my mind as I voted to Remain on 23rd June, was the thought that divorce can be one of the most stressful things in life.”

Shapps repeated this statement in 2018 when he tweeted about how he had voted for Remain two years previously.

Verdict

Grant Shapps is a fantasist.

We emailed Grant Shapps’ parliamentary office offering him the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.

Additional Note Since making the above remark Grant Shapps has been promoted to Defence Secretary
