“No tricks. No ambiguity. We’re either delivering for you or we’re not.”

PM Rishi Sunak, Press Conference

4 January 2023

Facts

The Prime Minister made this remark as he took questions after a speech making five new promises to voters for 2023.

His pledges were short on detail. For example no target or even  timeline was set for economic growth. Sunak contented himself with saying “we will grow the economy, creating better-paid jobs and opportunity right across the country.”

There was no attempt to say when, or by how much, the economy would grow- meaning that it would be virtually impossible to reach a judgment on whether the pledge had been delivered or not.

One of the pledges, namely that NHS “waiting lists will fall” was amended after publication, with the March deadline removed, according to a forensic investigation by Kevin Schofield at the Huffington Post.

Verdict

Sunak’s five pledges were laden with tricks and ambiguity.

We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
