Kay Burley confronted Sajid Javid as follows: “Labour say they have unearthed evidence of you avoiding hundreds of thousands of pounds in tax before you got into politics. Did you?” Javid replied “Of course not.”

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting had written to Mr Javid raising questions about Sajid Javid’s tax affairs. 

In a statement to the Sunday Times Javid has acknowledged he held non-dom status for six years while a banker, thus allowing him to legally avoid tax on overseas earnings.

Verdict

There is no suggestion that Sajid Javid has ever evaded tax payments, which would have been illegal. He has admitted to being “non-domiciled for tax purposes”, which can mean paying less tax than if domiciled in Britain. 

We approached Sajid Javid's office to give him a chance to comment, but received no response.
