"The action we've taken on energy bills will mean that Leeds and other people living in West Yorkshire aren't going to be facing energy pills of £6000, which is what was forecast. The maximum will be £2500."

PM Liz Truss, BBC Radio Leeds

29 September 2022

Facts

Analysis by Full Fact shows that the figure of £2,500 is based on average energy usage. Some households will pay less and some will pay more.

From Full Fact: ‘In response to Full Fact’s request for comment, Downing Street directed us to Ms Truss’s 8 September speech announcing the policy in Parliament, where she said: “A typical household will pay no more than £2,500 per year for each of the next two years”.’

Verdict

Many ordinary people will have gained the impression from listening to the Prime Minister that their bills will be capped at £2,500. That is not the case.  Liz Truss was misleading listeners.
