Facts
Analysis by Full Fact shows that the figure of £2,500 is based on average energy usage. Some households will pay less, some will pay more.
From Full Fact: ‘In response to Full Fact’s request for comment, Downing Street directed us to Ms Truss’s 8 September speech announcing the policy in Parliament, where she said: “A typical household will pay no more than £2,500 per year for each of the next two years”.’
Verdict
Many people will have gained the impression from listening to the Prime Minister that their bills will be capped at £2,500. That is not the case. It’s difficult to tell whether Liz Truss was deliberately misleading listeners or did not understand government policy.
We emailed Liz Truss’ office offering her the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
