“We will always support our hard-working nurses”

PM Rishi Sunak, House of Commons

26 October 2022

Facts

Speaking at his first Prime Minister's Questions, Sunak told parliament that "we will always supports our hard-working nurses."

Union officials say that since the Conservatives took power in 2010, the pay of some experienced nurses has fallen by 20% in real terms.

A survey, published 30 September by NHS Providers found that some nurses are being forced to skip meals in order to feed their children and are struggling to afford transport to work.

Verdict

Less than two months later the nurses went on strike.

A dubious claim from the Prime Minister at his first PMQs.

We emailed Rishi Sunak’s office and Downing Street offering them the chance to respond. The email was received, but no reply.
